When recently I spoke to Ann at her home in Nashville, she said, "Yes, in 'Bel Canto,' I was writing the same story I wrote in my other two novels. In three novels, I kept looking at that metamorphosis from different angles, until I felt I had gotten the job done.įor Ann Patchett, it's any situation in which two strangers come together and have to make the best of it. ![]() For me, as a writer, I was first drawn to tell stories about the changing American family. In other words, for whatever reason, we're individually drawn to certain ideas, as if we were paper clips resting quietly in our own drawer when a cold-hot magnet passes by. Inside all of us, there are interests like magnets. Both books are guaranteed to spark up your holiday dinner conversations.
